The flowers are small and grow in greenish catkins. It will bear hard brown nuts in clusters. They are fully hardy, and will prefer sunny positions or semi-shade, with fertile well drained soil. You can propagate the species by seeds in the autumn, the cultivars by grafting in late summer, or by suckers or layering in late autumn to early spring.
