There are about 30 species of deciduous perennials. They produce upright or nodding, solitary funnel-shaped flowers with 3 simple petals. The leaves are deciduous and produced in whorls which remain green until the autumn. They enjoy sun or partial shade with fertile, moist preferably neutral to acidic soil. Propagation is by division after the foliage has died down in the summer or by seeds in the autumn.
